Damien Posey is an award-winning Bay Area mentor, affectionately known as Uncle Damien to his community. As a low-income boy of color in the inner city, young Damien chose a too familiar path which led him toward a life of criminal behavior, gunfire exchange that resulted in his being shot five times, and ultimately incarceration.
During his ten-year incarceration, Damien experienced an awakening in which he realized that he wanted his daughter to have a better role model than he’d been and that young people were following him into his destructive life patterns. If he could lead them there, Damien reasoned, he could lead them to a better, more productive, healthier, non-violent life. Today, he devotes himself to helping young people avoid the path he took. After a decade of this work, Damien is now a sought-after motivational speaker who works in collaboration with hip-hop preacher Eric Thomas, and was later hired to work on San Francisco Mayor London Breed’s campaign. His upcoming podcast Once a Monster, Now a Mentor and YouTube videos under the title “Uncle Damien Speaks” are other means by which Damien hopes to offer inspiration and ideas for those seeking a better path.
