In 1966 when Linda Morrow’s first baby was diagnosed with Down Syndrome, despite what was the norm of the time, she refused to institutionalize her son. She was determined to raise Steve at home. For two more sons who follow and her husband, Linda tried to fulfill cultural norms as a homemaker, and as a woman whose voice is seldom heard or valued. But it wasn’t her nature to be meek.
At a time that preceded rights for the disabled, Linda became a fierce advocate for her son, following her heart to help Steve develop to his fullest potential. As she advocated for her son, Linda also learned to advocate for herself. As she pursued her career in public education, she unexpectedly fell in love with a woman and had to dig deep to accept her new identity before she was ready to meet her true soul mate.
In her memoir, Heart of This Family: Lessons in Down Syndrome and Love, Linda chronicle’s her son’s remarkable 49 years, sharing the innocent wisdom that he had to share. In Steve’s unbreakable spirit, Linda Morrow found her own.
