Toby Dorr might just be the world’s unlikeliest felon. So law-abiding that she counted to three at every stop sign before putting her foot on the gas, she had a lifelong drive to be “perfect” and to please others with no thought to her own needs. With her emotional well dry she had rendered herself vulnerable to trust the very first person who paid her attention—a choice that ultimately landed her in prison.
Jail time gave her a chance to reflect and she learned how far a person can fall…and still get up.
Toby owns her own choices and has sustained the loss of many of her family members, her life savings, her friends, her job, and her reputation. Today, she shares her story of rebuilding her life from scratch at age 51. She now shares her healing journey and the unvarnished truth. Known as The Dog Lady of Lansing Prison, Toby shares her story—Unleashed. Find Toby here:

Dear Toby,
I first learned about you in an article in The Atlantic magazine.
Thank you for your courage in telling your story.
I too, wanted to leave this world a better place. I fear that I have failed. Thank you again. You’ve given me so much to think about.
Toby,
I just saw the Dateline story. When I heard you had thyroid cancer and the prison breakout was totally out of character I expected in the end it would be explained by the wrong amount of thyroid meds in your system. That can cause psychiatric symptoms. In my case when the dosage was increased i went off the rails. Glad you are doing well.
